What is Quick-Sense USB-C PD and How Does it Work?

What is USB-C?

USB-C is a standard port and connector type that was developed to adapt USB technology to the requirements of current device technology. The plug is slimmer, reversible, and supports scalable power delivery and data performance.

What is USB PD?

PD stands for power delivery. Not all USB-C ports and cables support power delivery or charging. Some USB-C products support only data transfer, some support both charging and data transfer, while some only support charging. USB-C products that support fast charging leverage USB PD technology. While the maximum Wattage is limited by the device that is delivering the power as well as the maximum allowance of the receiving device, the technology can support up to 240W under its latest revision. USB PD technology can sense the amount of power required by a device, making it practical to have a standard USB-C port that can be used in many different device types, with a wide range of power and data requirements.

What is Quick-Sense USB-C PD?

Quick-Sense USB-C PD is a technology first developed by JAR Systems in 2018 which incorporates the USB-C port type and USB power delivery and expands on its functionality. Quick-Sense is designed to enable the charging of groups of devices from a single hub. Quick-Sense USB-C Charging Hubs come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different applications. A hub with lower device capacity, like an eight-capacity hub, for example, may always enable charging in the maximum Wattage output on all ports at once, while higher-capacity hubs may employ intelligent power distribution. The intelligent power distribution automatically evaluates the power draw of all connected devices and will limit the amount of power it provides by turning some ports off temporarily until the total power draw is low enough to turn them back on. This helps to prevent too much power from being drawn from the wall outlet, avoiding tripped circuit breakers. The maximum Wattage output per port also varies by the hub to apply to various use cases.

What are the benefits of products featuring Quick-Sense USB-C PD?

Quick-Sense USB-C charging technology powers a range of charging solutions from JAR Systems from desktop charging stations to high-capacity carts. Each brings unique benefits to different use cases. What they all have in common is that they enable charging without the use of AC adapters. This eliminates the time-consuming process of wiring AC adapters into cable management systems, which is a requirement for charging solutions that rely on AC power strips.

Quick-Sense is also much more energy efficient than using multiple AC adapters. Higher capacity systems enable more devices to be charged via a single standard outlet than would normally be possible without power distribution. The intelligence built into Quick-Sense’s power distribution provides devices with a faster and more balanced charge than simple timers and electrical switches.

If your organization has charging solutions from another manufacturer that do not charge well, or that you are tired of the expense of wiring and maintaining, they may be able to be outfitted with Quick-Sense Charging Hubs. This can be a more budget-friendly solution than purchasing all-new charging stations or carts. The hubs are self-contained, which enables them to be used in many applications and also makes repairs easy since the entire system can easily be removed and replaced.
